Le Lizay is a reef peak on the Atlantic-facing coast of Île de Ré that produces one of the island's most demanding waves. The break centres on a shallow, uneven rock ledge that transforms incoming W to NW swells into a steep, fast-moving left with genuine punch. At rising and high tides a shorter, softer right opens up on the opposite shoulder, giving the peak its a-frame character, though the left is the main event. The wave hollows quickly on takeoff - boils over the reef, a steep face and fast speed demand precise positioning and a committed drop. Rides run 50-100m before the wave either walls out or closes down. Wave size sits in the 0.6-2.4m range but the spot earns its expert-only reputation more from the reef's unforgiving shallowness than from raw size. Its best days arrive when a solid W swell wraps into the bay with a clean SE wind holding the face open. Because the island's geography filters out a lot of swell energy, truly perfect days are not frequent, but when they arrive the shape can be exceptional.
