St-Denis delivers a long left-hander that peels alongside the port jetty at the northern tip of Île d'Oléron. The wave breaks over a mixed bottom of uneven reef and sand, producing a slopey, well-covered wall that is forgiving enough for developing surfers yet long enough to hold interest when the swell is pumping. The ride is unhurried by island standards - medium-paced with sections that allow for drawn-out turns rather than snap decisions. It needs solid W to NW groundswell to wrap around the island's headland and generate any size, which keeps the consistency low; this is not a spot that rewards a casual check on average days. Mid to high tide is the window - the reef sections become a concern as the water drops, and the wave loses its shape entirely at low. The spot has a curious history: the original left vanished during port construction works before re-establishing itself beside the rebuilt jetty in its current form. Entry is straightforward from the port area, though active boat traffic around the jetty demands awareness. Because it handles bigger swell better than several neighbouring spots, St-Denis draws a crowd when conditions align, particularly on those rare large swells that clean up the whole island.
