La Côte Sauvage.

La Côte Sauvage is a raw, west-facing stretch of Atlantic beachbreak running roughly 15km along the tip of the Arvert peninsula in Charente-Maritime. The coast is fully exposed to open-ocean swell, and when an easterly offshore combines with a solid SW or NW groundswell, the sandy peaks can produce punchy, fast-running a-frames with genuine hollow sections — reminiscent of the Landes breaks further south. Wave depth data shows a mix of shallow and well-covered sections with flat spots, so quality varies considerably along the beach. The northern end, near Pointe Espagnole, tends to pick up swell more reliably than the central and southern sections. Towards the Coubre lighthouse to the south, La Bouverie offers an alternative access point when the main stretch is blown out or poorly shaped. The beach has hosted regular surf contests, which speaks to its capacity for quality conditions when everything lines up. Entry is straightforward from multiple beach access points with free car parks and roadside parking along the D25e coastal road. However, strong open-beach undercurrents and persistent longshore drift demand attention — this is an unprotected Atlantic coast and rip channels shift with sand movement. Jellyfish are a seasonal presence. The lineup stays relatively uncrowded for a spot of this quality, making it worth the effort to find a peak away from the main access points.
