Surf spot guide Β· Nouvelle Aquitaine, France
Mellow a-frame beach break on the Medoc coast with well-covered peaks best on incoming tide and E winds.
Montalivet is a sandy beach break on the Medoc coast of the Gironde, producing a-frame peaks that split into workable lefts and rights across a wide stretch of shoreline. The waves are characteristically slow and well-covered, with a slopey, crumbly face that favours drawn-out turns rather than power surfing. On incoming tide the banks tend to organise best, though the break performs across all tide stages. It fires on SW to NW swells, with a NW angle often producing the most defined peaks visible from the central car park - though explorers willing to walk the beach north or south will find less-pressured sandbars away from the main access point. The spot works reliably through the season and rarely needs a massive swell to produce rideable surf. Entry is straightforward from the beach with a free car park right at the break. The surf club runs regular sessions and is active in the water throughout the year. The south end of the beach is a well-known naturist zone, shared with visitors from the nearby holiday village, which adds a distinctive character to the lineup in summer. Crowd levels can climb during peak months but rarely reach the intensity of the more famous Landes breaks to the south.

The break attracts a moderate crowd, particularly around the central car park access in summer. Banks away from the main entry point offer noticeably fewer surfers.
