Le Crohot des Cavales sits within a large shadow zone on the Medoc coast, tucked between Hourtin lake to the east and the open Atlantic to the west. The break produces well-covered, slopey A-frame peaks across a sandy bottom, with a tendency toward steeper takeoffs and fast sections rather than hollow barrels. The wave wells up and runs with reasonable length — typically 50-100m — making it workable across a range of sizes from small fun surf up to a solid 2.5m when Atlantic swells stack in. It responds to SW through NW swell windows with W as the optimal direction, and an easterly offshore cleans things up nicely. Tides affect it less dramatically than many Landes beachbreaks, holding rideable shape across all stages. The spot sits noticeably to the north of Crohot proper, placing it even further from the road network than its already-isolated neighbours. Access is by bicycle only — the UCPA center at Bombannes provides the most direct route in, and most surfers arrive this way. The payoff for the effort is real: crowd counts here regularly sit at solo or near-solo levels even when nearby Carcans and Lacanau are heaving. Flat spots can appear between the better sandbars, so it's worth riding along the shoreline on the way in to identify the best-looking peaks before paddling out.
