Le Grand Crohot.

Le Grand Crohot is a versatile sand break on the Atlantic-facing side of the Cap Ferret peninsula, producing hollow, fast-breaking a-frame peaks across shifting outer and inner bars. The wave wells up quickly from the shallow sand, throwing steep, punchy sections on both lefts and rights. In the 0.5-1.5m range the banks can deliver clean, makeable walls with occasional hollow lips; the outside bars offer more power but tend to shut down above 2m, making the inside sections the better call when swell exceeds that threshold. SW through NW swell angles all work, with a pure W being the optimal direction, and an easterly wind cleans the face up nicely. The break works across all tides, giving it a reliable window on a coastline where timing matters. Consistency is high through autumn and winter when Atlantic groundswells stack up, though summer windswells can also produce fun, peaky conditions on the outer sandbars. Grand Crohot sits roughly 60km southwest of Bordeaux, making it the most accessible quality beach break for city surfers. The car park behind the dunes is the standard entry point - it's a short walk over the dune ridge to the beach. The tradeoff for that convenience is weekend crowds, which pile in from Bordeaux particularly in summer. Heading south toward the naturist beach of Petit Crohot thins out the lineup considerably and often reveals equally good or better bank formations.
