La Pointe.

La Pointe sits at the southern tip of the Cap Ferret peninsula where the Atlantic meets the Bassin d'Arcachon inlet. When solid SW to NW swells arrive, energy wraps around the headland and refracts into the sheltered basin, producing short but surprisingly tubey rights and occasional a-frame peaks over a sandy bottom. The bowly, wrapping character of the wave - shaped by the channel influence - gives it a punchy, fast quality that differs from the more conventional beach breaks along the open ocean side of the peninsula. West winds blow offshore here, making it one of the few spots on this stretch that cleans up in the prevailing onshore conditions. The wave rarely breaks, needing substantial swell energy to wrap far enough into the basin, and when it does the runs are typically 50-100m before the current takes over. That current is the defining reality of surfing here - tidal flow through the Arcachon channel is powerful and irregular, creating bumpy, unpredictable rides. Submerged hazards including old jetty remnants, channel markers and oyster bed debris add a genuine element of risk. The spot draws a loyal bodyboard contingent who handle the current well. Localism exists and is worth acknowledging before paddling out. The iconic Dune du Pyla is visible across the basin, a useful orientation landmark.
