Lacanau.

Lacanau is a high-energy beach break running across 14km of Atlantic-facing sandy coastline in the Gironde. The break produces genuine A-frames off shifting sand banks, shaped and stabilised by a series of rock jetties that create the scalloped baines characteristic of this stretch of coast. At low tide the waves peel fast along the outer banks, steep and hollow with a tendency to tube in solid swell. As the tide rises, banks closer to shore offer shorter, punchier rides that taper into the rips, while a mid-to-high tide can produce crumbling shorebreak sections. A medium W-NW swell is the sweet spot, but the spot handles size better than most Landes beaches thanks to the depth around the jetty structures. In summer, Atlantic windswell can produce waves that outperform breaks further south. The key sub-breaks - La Nord, La Sud, and Super Sud - each develop distinct bank formations depending on sand movement and swell angle, and conditions are easily read from the boardwalk at Plage Centrale before committing to a section. Lacanau has hosted a professional contest every year since 1979, cementing its status as the focal point of southwest French surfing. That history draws crowds: summer lineups can be dense, though the sheer length of beach means spreading out is always possible. Rips funnel hard through the trenches between banks and around the jetties - the same structures that create quality surf also concentrate current.
