Pontaillac is a compact sandy bay break sitting inside the city of Royan, where the Gironde estuary meets the Atlantic. The small cove geometry provides natural shelter, meaning the spot only comes alive when there is enough swell energy to punch through - typically on solid W or WNW groundswell with a NE wind keeping it clean. Waves are moderate in pace with a slopey character, producing left and right peaks across a predominantly sandy bottom, though rocky borders frame the bay and submerged objects are present closer to the edges. Rides run 50-100m on a good day. The spot works across all tidal states but size is critical; without genuine swell, the sheltered position kills the energy entirely. The Gironde mouth and Atlantic approaches filter out smaller pulses, so patience is part of the deal here. Within Royan itself the break is well known and draws a local crowd - this is not a spot that absorbs numbers well, and the territorial nature of the lineup means visitors should read the vibe before paddling straight out. When the main peak gets too congested or fills with beginners, Nauzan a couple of kilometres up the coast offers a comparable setup with less pressure, while Suzac is another nearby alternative worth considering.
