Chassiron sits at the exposed northern tip of Île d'Oléron, where a rocky, uneven reef shelf channels swell energy into a well-defined a-frame. The predominant shape is a walled left that runs long at lower tides, with a shorter, punchier right option off the same peak. The wave is hollow and steep, with boils betraying the shallow sections beneath - speed through the barrel sections is non-negotiable. It works best on solid SW to NW swells, with W being the optimal angle, and demands a SE wind to clean up the face. The window is strictly low to mid tide; as water pushes over the reef the wave loses its shape and the surge becomes genuinely hazardous. Oléron's most consistently performing break, it picks up swell that other spots on the island miss entirely. Entry involves a lengthy walk across a channelled fishing reef at low water - booties are essential, not optional, given the dense urchin population along this approach. Rips here are described as violent rather than merely strong, running hard off the reef and capable of moving surfers significant distances quickly. This is not a spot to underestimate: shallow reef, powerful rips and a technical entry combine to make it firmly the domain of capable surfers who can read water and commit to fast takeoffs.
