The bottom is well-covered enough to keep things user-friendly across all stages of the tide, though flat spots are common and the wave rarely generates real power. What it lacks in quality it compensates for in reliability - when SW through NW swells push into the bay, the surrounding headlands strip away the wind and knock the size down, leaving cleaner, smaller surf than anything exposed to the open Vendee coast. The north end, closest to the jetty, works best when swell has some size to it, as the structure focuses energy and produces more defined walls. Moving south, Tanchet draws more raw swell and delivers longer rides but with a higher close-out rate; the reef section at Les Sables itself handles the drop to low tide better, with the sand held in place by underlying reef. NE winds - the prevailing offshore here - groom the bay well. The spot earns its crowds precisely because it is the go-to refuge when northerly winds flatten or chop up every exposed beach along this stretch of coast. Expect a busy lineup most days, particularly on weekends and during any swell that turns the open beaches messy.
