Vieux Boucau sits where a tidal lake meets the Atlantic on the Landes coast, and that geography shapes everything about how it breaks. Two distinct setups flank the lake entrance: the north side delivers steep, hollow peaks that quicken considerably on higher tides, while the southern stretch - Port d'Albret leading into the Soustons corridor - offers more consistent shape across a broader range of swell sizes and holds larger surf better than the breaks immediately to the north. Both sides work on any tide, though incoming tide is the documented sweet spot. The break responds to NW swells, which funnel cleanly into this section of coast, and it handles a wide size range from ankle-high beginners' conditions up to well overhead. The D652 road runs close enough to the shore that checking conditions without leaving the car is straightforward, making it easy to scout peaks before paddling out. August is a different world - campsites and holiday lets pack the surrounding area, and the lineup reflects it. Locals, who normally hold a relaxed grip on the place, become noticeably territorial as the summer population peaks. Rips run strong on the north side when surf climbs past head-high, and the rivermouth area generates particularly aggressive current. Surf schools operate here, so expect a mix of ability levels in the water during summer months.
