Messanges is a classic Landes beach break where the quality of the session depends almost entirely on where the sandbars have settled. On a good day - and there are plenty - west to northwest swells stack into genuine A-frame peaks with hollow, fast-running sections that fire off in both directions. On a bad day, onshore winds and poor bar alignment produce little more than crumbly, disorganised surf. The bottom is pure sand throughout, which keeps the wave forgiving underfoot even when it stands up quickly. The tide plays a significant role here: the bars tend to sit deeper than at neighbouring beaches, meaning high tide can kill the shape or push the break uncomfortably close to the shoreline. Low to mid tide windows typically produce the most defined peaks with the clearest channels. Access is a short walk over the dune from a height-restricted car park, with additional space for campervans set back among the trees. The nearby Le Vieux Port campsite feeds a steady stream of surfers to the lineup through summer, and the peaks can get genuinely busy during the school holiday period. Outside of July and August, the crowd thins considerably and the banks reward patience. Vieux Boucau, just 2-3km south, offers an alternative when the sand here is poorly aligned.
