Moliets Plage.

Moliets Plage is a wide, open Atlantic beachbreak on the Landes coast of southwest France, breaking over pure sand in shifting peaks that can produce A-frame walls or close-out slabs depending entirely on the day's sandbar configuration. The beach soaks up W to NW swells reliably — consistency is high through much of the year — and on a good morning with a light easterly offshore, well-covered banks produce slopey, medium-speed walls with occasional hollow sections. The real wildcard here is the Huchet river outflow from Lac de Léon at the southern end; lower tides can sculpt defined sandbars around the river mouth that punch above the beach average. High tide generally degrades the setup, flattening out any shape the banks had. The wave length stays short — peaks rarely extend beyond 50m — making it a punchy, section-heavy experience rather than a long ride. Moliets draws enormous summer crowds driven by a cluster of surf schools, camps, and a large campsite that buses in beginners from across northern Europe. This volume of inexperienced surfers in the water creates friction with local regulars, and tension is a documented feature of the peak summer period. Paddling out via the natural channels alongside the river mouth is the cleanest entry. Arriving early or surfing well outside the July-August window is the most effective way to find uncrowded conditions and better-formed banks.
