La Nord.

La Nord is the northernmost of the Hossegor cluster and the go-to beachbreak when the Bay of Biscay surges toward 3m on the offshore buoy and the rest of the stretch becomes unsurfable close-out. The break sits over a shifting outside sandbank that steepens as swell size builds, producing fast, hollow walls - predominantly rights - that funnel toward a defined rip channel on the southern side of the peak. That same channel is the paddling highway out, though it runs with serious force during peak swell, carrying water draining south from the Seignosse whitewater maelstrom further up the coast. Lefts are on offer but typically send surfers across the channel and into a grinding paddle back. A vicious shorebreak guards entry at the sand's edge; reading a lull before committing is non-negotiable. Inside the break, a pronounced trough can appear suddenly, dropping the bottom out for anyone caught mid-paddle. The bank is inherently mobile - it shifts with each significant swell cycle - so what fired yesterday may not exist tomorrow. Despite that unpredictability, optimal conditions produce barrel sections and steep drop-ins that justify the spot's reputation as one of the finest big-wave beachbreaks on the Atlantic coast. Mid-tide is generally the sweet spot, though the bank can produce at all stages. The SUP contingent colonises the peak on smaller days, and when any real swell arrives the crowd swells dramatically, with spectators lining the beach as much as surfers in the water.
