Hossegor-area beach break firing hollow, punchy a-frame barrels over sand — one of the most photographed waves on the Landes coast.
La Piste/VVF sits at the southern end of the Hossegor/Capbreton stretch where massive dunes buffer the inland sprawl and half-buried WWII blockhaus dot the beach — lending it an instantly recognisable look that has made it a fixture in surf photography for decades. The sandbanks here have a reputation for producing more concentrated power than the open beaches immediately to the north, throwing up steep, wedging a-frames that demand a committed takeoff. The wave is genuinely hollow, fast-running, and bowly, with boils on the shallower sections adding an unpredictable element. Low to mid tide on an incoming cycle is the prime window, when banks tighten and the wave takes on extra punch — overhead-plus sets arriving on a solid W to NW swell are when it earns its excellent reputation. It needs a bit more swell energy to fire than the more exposed northern beaches, and onshore conditions kill it quickly. Further up the beach toward the VVF camping village the crowds thin marginally, though quality banks appear throughout. The lineup carries a high-ability average year-round — confident intermediates and above only. Localism is real and has been known to turn tense; reading the pecking order before paddling out is strongly advised.

La Piste is consistently one of the busiest breaks on the Capbreton/Hossegor coastline — its high consistency and excellent wave quality ensure a packed lineup of shortboarders, bodyboarders, and visiting surfers on virtually every swell. Priority is fiercely contested and the atmosphere can turn tense.
