Vila Franca is a reef peak on the south coast of Sao Miguel, sheltered by Ilheu da Vila - a small islet 600 meters offshore. The islet partially blocks wind but not swell, and the break picks up groundswell from NE to W, with due S optimal. The wave is an a-frame over uneven reef, steep and welling up - takeoffs are vertical and committed. Rides run 200 to 500 meters on clean days, making it one of the longer waves on Sao Miguel when period is right. At sub-mid tide the peak sharpens with punchy sections and barrel potential; high tide fills the reef and opens the face for turns. Below mid-tide the reef runs dangerously shallow - experienced surfers only. Mild residential pollution from the town reaches the lineup, and jellyfish are common seasonally. The spot sits directly off the Vila Franca do Campo seafront, with free parking near the fishing harbour a short walk away. Crowds are rare - this is not a mainstream surf destination and the local crew is small.
