Santa Barbara is a sand-bottom beachbreak on the north coast of Sao Miguel, separated from Monte Verde by a rocky headland near Ribeira Seca. The outer reef sits on an extinct volcano crater rim, driving heavy swell refraction and producing wedging, bowly peaks arriving from multiple directions. Fast and hollow with genuine barrel sections, the break picks up swell from SW through E, with NW groundswell delivering the sharpest quality. The WSL Qualifying Series has held events here, validating its reputation. Heavy rip currents are a defining hazard - they run with force along the beach and demand respect above 1.5m. Entry is from the main beach behind the free carpark at Ribeira Seca. Crowds draw from nearby Ribeira Grande and seasonal surf tourism, building during summer and competition windows. Monte Verde sits 1.7km east as the natural fallback when Santa Barbara is maxed or crowded.
