Populo.

Populo is a versatile beachbreak fronting the eastern suburbs of Ponta Delgada, anchored on a composite bottom of sand and uneven reef that gives the banks unexpected longevity. The break runs on an unusually wide swell window - anything from NE around to W will generate rideable surf - but the spot genuinely transforms on solid southern hemisphere groundswell. When deep-ocean S swell hits the rock-anchored banks at full period, the peaks stand up steep and hollow, producing barrel sections and fast walls that stretch 200-500m before fading into the channel. The regular SW and W windswells deliver crumbly, workable surf that is never flat and always accessible. Entry is straightforward from the beach, with no rock jumps or channel navigation required. The break functions at all tides, though swell quality improves on cleaner faces rather than the windchop that accompanies onshore flow. As the busiest surf spot in the Azores, Populo has full infrastructure on the seafront.
