Heavy, expert-only righthand reef at Ponta Delgada's eastern tip, producing hollow barrels from 3m up to double-overhead-plus.
Santa Clara is a submerged reef break at the eastern edge of Ponta Delgada's airport on the south coast of Sao Miguel. The wave is a righthand barrel that only fires on very large S, SW or W groundswells - 3m or bigger before it shows its true character. When it does, the takeoff is critical and near-vertical over an uneven reef, leading into high-speed barrel sections running 50 to 100 metres before shutting down. The well-covered depth profile gives the wave pace without being instantly lethal, but the entry window is tight and a bad line at this size has consequences. All tides work - tidal variation shifts the wave shape rather than switching it on or off. The airport sits directly behind the break, and city sewage and stormwater outfalls mean water quality drops sharply after heavy rain. Crowds are rarely an issue: most surfers chase the more consistent breaks on the island's north and east coasts, leaving this wave to whoever is willing to wait out the long flat spells.
