Surf spot guide · São Miguel, Portugal
Fast, punchy boulder pointbreak tucked inside a harbour wall on Sao Miguel's north coast, best on solid NE swell.
Rabo de Peixe is a semi-pointbreak against the harbour wall on Sao Miguel north coast, breaking over boulders. Fast left walls open with vertical take-offs before shifting to workable cutback shoulders as size and tide vary. Smaller swells keep the wave close to the rocks; bigger sets break outside and wider. Barrel sections are possible but the wave does not hollow consistently. It works across all tides, though lower water exposes shallow boulder sections with boils and flatspots. A wide W-to-NE swell window fires the break, with NE groundswell producing the cleanest lines and a southerly offshore. Entry is from the car park at the harbour wall via metal ladders. The take-off zone is compressed against the wall, amplifying the localism this spot is notorious for on the island. Residential buildings on the clifftop above discharge sewage and stormwater and generate debris. Santa Barbara beachbreak, 3.5km east, is a less pressured fallback on the same swell.

Often crowded and heavily localised. The tight take-off zone amplifies pack density and locals control priority firmly.
