Remote big-wave bombora east of Maia, jacking hard over a submerged reef with long rides only when serious swell arrives.
Baixa de Viola is a serious big-wave reef break sitting just east of the village of Maia on the north coast of São Miguel. The wave jacks up over a bombora-style submerged reef, pitching with considerable power before rolling along for 200 to 500 metres on the right swell. It needs significant size to start breaking properly -- the spot simply does not turn on below 3 metres -- and when it does it rewards with some of the longest and most powerful rides available anywhere in the Azores. The peak throws up left and right options depending on the angle of the swell, with northwest swells producing the most organised lines. The spot is severely exposed to the wind and conditions can deteriorate fast; a southerly is the only reliable offshore. Access is straightforward via a new concrete road east of Maia leading to a dedicated car park, but the isolation means surfing alone here is genuinely dangerous. Big rocks and rip currents demand respect even for experienced big-wave riders.
