Faja do Araujo is the only surf break on the east coast of Sao Miguel and one of the most demanding waves in the Azores. A left-hand point break over boulders, it needs a massive NW swell of at least 4.5m open ocean to refract 90 degrees around the headland and begin peeling at half that size. When the swell fires, the wave delivers freight-train barrels running 200 to 500 metres over slabs of unpredictable rock. The takeoff is critical, with big drops into cavernous sections that demand precision from the first stroke. Thick, welling power and a hollow shape leave no margin for hesitation. Access requires a logging road to a cluster of houses, then a 30-minute walk up the rocky shoreline to a difficult water entry about 15 minutes paddle south of the break. Extremely isolated with very low consistency. No facilities exist. Expert big-wave surfers only; best surfed solo on low to mid tide.

Take the logging road east of Pedraira to the cluster of houses at road's end, then walk 30 minutes up the rocky shoreline. Water entry and exit is difficult from the rocks approximately 15 minutes paddle south of the break. No car park, lifeguard, restrooms, showers, surf school or surf shop.
