Santa Iria is a left-hand point break wrapping around a rocky headland near Ribeirinha on Sao Miguel north coast. The wave peels over uneven reef, producing lined-up walls running 200-500m on a solid day. Sections bowl and wrap with real punch on a west-to-northwest swell - one of the better points in the Azores. Cliffs and the headland block southwesterly and westerly winds; southerly offshore is the key condition. Low tide disconnects sections; high tide cuts land access entirely, so the usable window is rising and falling tide only. Getting in means a 20-minute walk from east of Ribeirinha: dirt road, cross fields, follow the river to the coast, then east along the shoreline into the bay. The cliffs at the corner of the last bay are crumbling and prone to landslides - scan above before crossing. Check from the miradouro at Santa Iria before committing to the hike. Crowds are rare; the approach filters out most surfers, keeping the lineup to a small regular crew.

Park east of Ribeirinha at the beginning of a dirt road. Cross fields and follow the river to the coast, then follow the coast east into the bay. Minimum 20 minutes on foot. Beware of crumbling rocks and landslides at the corner of the last bay. Check from the miradouro at Santa Iria before committing. Roadside and free parking available. High tide blocks land access entirely.
