Ribeira Quente Left runs along the armoured flank of the large jetty that anchors the village of Ribeira Quente on Sao Miguel's southern shore. The wave pitches hard off the structure and peels for 100-200m, delivering punchy, performance-oriented sections that suit an intermediate to advanced surfer comfortable with fast drops and abrupt walls. Barrel sections appear on the better swells and performance manoeuvres open up across the long wall. The break comes alive on a solid S or SE swell, with wrapping E-NE energy also pushing in on certain groundswells. High tide is the preferred window - it smooths out the reef and extends the ride past the end of the sea defences into the sandy beach at the base of the car park. On smaller days the wave detonates at the jetty tip and the ride is short. A northerly offshore holds the face up cleanly. The thermal spring that gives the village its name ('Hot River') runs into the sea here, an unusual feature that keeps the water marginally warmer than surrounding breaks.
