Monte Verte is the only north-facing beachbreak in the Azores, set on black sand just west of Ribeira Grande. Shifting peaks run the length of the beach with a semi-permanent right at the western end that delivers the most consistent walls. The shape is hollow and steep when the banks align - punchy, performance-ready sections rather than the crumbly character the beginner rating implies. Wave faces are well-covered rather than draining dry, keeping the ride accessible while rewarding committed surfing. The swell window is unusually wide, catching energy from SW through E, but the spot fires best on a solid NW where it holds up to 3m. SE winds are offshore. Access is easy via a free car park above the beach. River and commercial runoff creates water quality issues after heavy rain. A surf shop is in town. Consistent year-round, the break draws a regular local crowd that fills the lineup in summer, though the long beach allows spreading across multiple peaks.
