Espinho.

Espinho is north Portugal's flagship wave, peeling off the end of a SW-pointing jetty and running for up to 200-500m before shutting down hard over shallow rocks on the inside. The jetty structure organises the sandbank, producing a walled-up right that tubes consistently through the mid section on solid NW swells in the 0.6-3.5m range. The shape is hollow and moves quickly, rewarding surfers who can read a fast line early and exit before the close-out section. It fires best at low to mid tide on a rising push, with an easterly offshore holding the face open. Consistent by the standards of this coast, it picks up any significant NW or SW groundswell wrapping around the headlands north of Porto, making it one of the most reliable options in the region. Paddle out alongside the jetty wall to avoid the breaking waves; the channel is clearly defined at most tides. Crowd pressure is real - this is the busiest water in the area, and a territorial local crew has been here for decades. First-timers should read the lineup before committing. Water quality is a persistent concern; pollution spikes after rainfall are common and documented by local surfers.
