Rare but world-class hollow river-mouth sandbar producing freight-train rights at the Douro estuary.
The Douro River mouth deposits sand across a shifting bank at the southern edge of Porto, and on the handful of days each year when conditions align, the result is one of Portugal's most spectacular beach breaks. The dominant wave is a fast, hollow right that can run for an extraordinary distance, with a punishing drop and sections that demand full commitment from the first stroke. Short lefts form on the opposite shoulder but rarely hold the same quality. The wave is notoriously fickle - a consistency rating near the bottom of the scale tells the real story. It needs a solid NW swell, incoming tide, and an easterly to stand the faces up cleanly. When those stars align, a crowd materialises instantly, drawn by reputation. The Douro estuary brings a serious pollution load into the lineup, and river-mouth rip currents run powerfully across the sandbar, particularly as the tide fills. Locals have a well-established territorial claim here and are not welcoming to strangers on the best sets. Entry is straightforward from the beach, but reading the rip channels before paddling out saves significant energy. There is parking at the car park above the beach and roadside options nearby.
