Praia do Aterro is a mixed beach and reef break sitting on the northern fringe of Porto's urban coastline, sandwiched between petrochemical infrastructure that defines both its atmosphere and its water quality concerns. The break produces a-frame peaks over uneven reef and sand, with the more characterful option being a rocky low-tide left peeling off a small point. This section rewards surfers who can read a broken, boil-riddled bottom and commit to a fast drop before the wave sections. The beach break peaks that form alongside are more forgiving and shift position depending on swell angle, working best on incoming swell from the SW to W arc. A genuine W swell with easterly offshores is the setup to chase. The wave face tends to be slopey to crumbly rather than truly hollow, occasionally throwing up steeper sections where the reef concentrates energy. Wave lengths are short - expect rides in the 50m range at most. The location draws a moderate spread of Porto-area surfers but rarely gets dangerously crowded. The industrial setting is the main deterrent, and the rocks throughout the lineup make this unsuitable for beginners - scattered submerged sections can catch out the inattentive. Parking is available both in a small car park and roadside.
