Mindelo is a sandy beach break sitting on the Portuguese Atlantic coast north of Porto, producing genuine A-frame peaks that can deliver hollow, fast tubes when conditions cooperate. The wave runs over a pure sand bottom, with banks that shift but regularly throw up bowly, slopey sections capable of going from open face to draining barrel in a single move. At its best on solid W to SW swells with an easterly offshore blowing, the peaks come to life across all tides, though lower water levels help avoid the shoredump shorebreak that kills the wave when tide fills in over the shallow inside. The break has earned a loyal following among bodyboarders drawn to its regular tube sections - the environment near the rocks at the south end of the beach concentrates the best shape. Swell from S through NW all wraps into the bay, giving the break reasonable swell options, but quality drops fast once size pushes above the 2m mark and banks max out into messy close-outs. A river estuary in the vicinity means water quality can suffer after rain. A free car park near the rocks provides straightforward land access, making this one of the more accessible quality options on this stretch of coast.
