Matosinhos is a sandy urban beach break sitting just north of Porto, offering two distinct surfing sections that behave quite differently. The southern section sits in the lee of a large breakwater, which dampens the energy on large swells and makes it the more approachable option when the Atlantic is firing on all cylinders. The northern section is the more consistent of the two, picking up SW-NW groundswell reliably and forming decent a-frame peaks that work best as the tide drops toward low. Easterly winds groom the faces cleanly. Wave faces in the 0.6-2.4m range are common, keeping it accessible for beginners and intermediates building confidence on open-ocean swell. The beach is Metro-accessible from central Porto, which explains the crowd - on any decent day the water fills up fast, particularly on weekends. Surf schools operate here regularly given the gentle entry and sandy bottom. The main caveat is water quality: the proximity to the city and the harbour means pollution is a documented issue, and surfing here after heavy rainfall carries a real risk. On clean-water days between swells, early mornings offer the best combination of light crowds and glassy conditions.
