Poça is a mid-tide reef break sitting on the Costa do Estoril, west of Lisbon, breaking over an uneven mix of reef and sand. The A-frame peak delivers two distinct personalities: the left is a sucky, bowly tube that compresses fast off the take-off and draws a heavy bodyboarder following hungry for barrels; the right offers a longer wall with more defined lip line, giving surfers room to work sections. Both directions fire on solid S through NW swells, with W being the sweet spot, and the wave shuts down outside mid tide when the reef becomes sharp and hazardous. The break gains its shape from a shallow, boil-producing bottom that produces a wrapping, bowly entry - positioning is critical. Poça sits right in the middle of a dense cluster of quality breaks between Monte Estoril to the west and Azarujinha to the east, making it one of the most competitive lineups on this stretch. Crowds are relentless - this is one of the busiest reefs on the Estoril coast, and localism runs strong. Paddling out is straightforward at mid tide via the channel to the east, but the entry gets sketchy toward the tidal extremes when submerged rock sections are exposed. Pollution can be an issue after heavy rain.
