Bolina is the westernmost of three reef breaks clustered along the São João stretch of the Costa Estoril, sitting between Tamariz to the west and Poça to the east. It delivers a high-quality, fast right-hander that pitches over a shallow, uneven reef-and-sand bottom with real power and a hollow face that rewards committed, precise surfing. The wave is thick through the take-off and accelerates quickly into a compact barrel section, leaving little room for hesitation. It needs a solid SW swell to switch on - the optimum window runs from S through to NW - and is strictly a mid-tide proposition, with the rising tide being the cleaner call. Anything outside that window either exposes dangerous reef or drowns the wave's character. Bolina sits within easy reach of central Lisbon along the Estoril coast road, with roadside and car park options nearby, but proximity to the city means the water quality dips after significant rainfall due to nearby river influence. The break carries a strong local crew who know exactly who belongs in the lineup, and that territorial vibe is firmly established - newcomers should watch from the rocks first, pick their moment carefully, and give priority freely. Not remotely suitable for beginners or intermediates.
