Mangahume is a serious right-hand point break wrapping around a rocky headland just south of Opunake on the Taranaki coast. The wave jacks hard off uneven reef, producing hollow, fast walls with barrel sections that run 200 to 500 metres on a solid SW swell. The takeoff is critical and the wave is shallow with boils, demanding precise positioning and confidence in heavy water. Access requires walking along a creek bed to the beach - surrounding farmland is private property and must not be crossed. A gated road leads to the cliff top but offers no direct water access. Rips, submerged rocks, and sharks are all present hazards, and local knowledge of the paddle-out and lineup is essential when size increases. The remoteness and difficulty keep crowds virtually nonexistent, making it one of Taranaki's hidden high-quality waves. Sky Williams, a left-hander, breaks off the same point.
