Kina Road.

Kina Road is a beachbreak setup on the exposed Taranaki coast near Opunake, where peaks form on either side of the river flow over a mix of uneven reef and sand. The spot sits squarely in the path of the prevailing winds, which means it's frequently blown out - but that same exposure also draws wind rigs and kitesurfers who share the lineup on windier days. When the wind swings NE and a solid SW swell is running, the lefts and rights either side of the river can actually handle decent size and make the most of whatever energy the Tasman delivers. This is one of the more reliable checks along this stretch. Wave faces run from 2 to 2.4m with rides of 50 to 100 metres. The spot works across all tidal stages with outgoing conditions tending to produce the sharpest banks. The wind exposure keeps most surfers at more sheltered options nearby. Check the sucky rights at the end of Arawhata Road when swells are small and NE winds are clean for a shorter, punchier alternative. Sharks are present and submerged reef sections add consequence through the lineup.
