Komene Road.

Komene Road is one of those Taranaki discoveries that rewards the surfer willing to drive past the obvious. Sitting roughly 2km south of The Patch along the rugged coastline between Okato and the Stony River mouth, this left point bends around a boulder-and-sand bottom that gives the wave its distinct character - technical enough to keep the beginners away, accessible enough that intermediate surfers who read the ocean well can find themselves in an uncrowded lineup with proper surf. The break picks up swell from a wide SW-NW window, so on those classic Taranaki winter swells tracking up from the Southern Ocean, Komene Road will be working when other spots are already blown out or maxed. Rocky peaks run all the way down from the Stony River mouth, giving options to hunt the best section depending on swell angle. SE winds - the prevailing offshore for this stretch - groom the face nicely, and the wave handles all tides with incoming being the sweet spot for linking longer sections. Faces range from a punchy 0.6m to a genuinely powerful 2.4m, and at size the hollow, steep drops demand respect. The boulder bottom creates boils and uneven sections that catch you off guard, and like most of Taranaki's exposed coast, the shark risk is real.
