Surf spot guide Β· Taranaki, New Zealand
Left reef tucked behind the harbour that needs sizeable SW-W swells for true tube colours β otherwise lazy and sectiony.
High Waves
Large waves up to 2.2m expected at Belt Road. Peak conditions around 6:00 AM.
Exercise extreme caution when entering the water. Strong currents and large waves present. Warning valid until 9:00 PM.
Belt Road leads to a left-hand reef break tucked in behind New Plymouth harbour, sheltered enough that it needs a pretty sizeable SW to W swell to bend around the headland and show its true colours. When that swell arrives, the reef can produce legitimate tube sections over a mix of uneven reef and sand, with rides stretching 200 to 500 metres when the wave links through its multiple sections. On smaller swells the wave tends to be lazy and sectiony - not bad, but not worth the drive if there are better options working along the Surf Highway. Mid to high tide on an incoming push is the target, and southerly winds groom the face. The sharp rocks throughout the lineup demand awareness on every entry and exit, and on the better days the crowd fills in quickly. No localism or sharks flagged, making it one of the more approachable intermediate-level reefs in the New Plymouth area.

Sometimes crowded β 6/10 on the good days. Sharp rocks and crowds when the swell is solid.
