Waitara Bar.

Waitara Bar sits at the mouth of the Waitara River on Taranaki's north coast, producing hollow, fast peaks over a shifting bottom of boulders and sand. The east side of the river throws up punchy A-frames with barrel sections on solid SW to NW swells, while a quality left peels off the western bank with additional reef setups nearby. The wave needs a decent winter swell to turn on and favours calm conditions or a SE wind, a rare combo in this wind-prone region. High tide on the incoming push is critical, as the shallow takeoff zone drains out at lower stages. Strong rips run through the channel, and the river drains agricultural land so water quality drops sharply after rain. The lineup carries a reputation for localism - Stormrider notes it is not known for its welcoming vibe. The Waitara Boardriders Club sits right on the eastern beach. When conditions align, the hollow walls and vertical takeoffs reward committed intermediates and above.
