Surf spot guide Β· Taranaki, New Zealand
Hollow outside left reef needing big swell and a long paddle β power to burn and a local crew to match.
High Waves
Large waves up to 2.8m expected at Bell Block. Peak conditions around 9:00 PM.
Exercise extreme caution when entering the water. Strong currents and large waves present. Warning valid until 9:00 PM.
Bell Block is a powerful outside left reef that sits offshore from the beachbreak of the same name, north of New Plymouth. The wave demands a big swell - minimum 1.8m, up to 12 - and a long paddle to reach the takeoff zone. When it fires, the reef delivers hollow, punchy lefts over uneven reef with genuine power. The beachbreak inside works at a fraction of the size and is suitable for beginners at mid tide, but the outside reef is strictly expert territory. Low tide on an outgoing push is the window - the reef stands up most aggressively with minimal water over it. SW swell is optimal, and southerly winds groom the face clean. Every experienced surfer in the New Plymouth area knows the forecast and will be there. Localism is real: the reef has a committed local crew who are protective and will make their presence felt. Rip currents and submerged reef are serious hazards. The quality is excellent on its best days, making it one of Taranaki's most rewarding and most demanding reef breaks.
