Surf spot guide Β· Taranaki, New Zealand
Mellow beachbreak with boulder sections near Oakura, offering easy rolling peaks suited to longboarding and all levels.
Weld Road sits on the Taranaki coast just south of Oakura, delivering easy A-frame peaks over a mixed sand and boulder bottom. The wave is forgiving and slow-rolling, with a steep but manageable takeoff that softens into a mellow wall ideal for cutbacks and longboard cruising. Rides run 50 to 100 metres on good days. Positioned next to Ahu Ahu Road, the spot shares similar southwest wind protection thanks to the curve of the coastline beneath Mount Taranaki. It handles a wide swell window from southwest through to north, but fires best on clean SW groundswell and prefers the rising to high tide when boulders near the rivermouth are safely covered. Access is straightforward down Weld Road to roadside parking at the beach. The surrounding farmland hides several tracks to lesser-known breaks, though permission is needed to cross private property. Crowds build on good days given the easy access and beginner-friendly conditions, but the multiple peaks absorb numbers well. Sharks are present in the area and submerged rocks demand awareness, particularly at lower tides near the rivermouth boulders.
