Oakura sits on the Surf Highway 45 coast south of New Plymouth, offering a forgiving beachbreak that shifts between sand bars and patches of uneven reef. Multiple peaks produce both lefts and rights, with hollow sections that can deliver surprising punch when a solid SW swell pushes through. Stream mouths along the beach sculpt low-tide sandbars, creating additional takeoff zones that change shape with each season. An outer bombie provides a big-wave option when the swell maxes out. The spot picks up anything from SW through to N, and its position tucked slightly south of the New Plymouth headland gives it shelter from strong southerlies, meaning it often has rideable surf when exposed breaks are blown out. Oakura works across all tides, though the beachbreak peaks tend to be best at higher water while the stream-mouth bars favour low tide. Rip currents are the primary hazard, particularly near the river mouths. Crowds build through summer when the patrolled beach draws swimmers and holiday surfers, but the long stretch of sand spreads numbers across several peaks.
