A west-facing boulder-and-sand reef setup that picks up everything from SW through to N swells, making it one of the more consistent options along the Surf Highway. The outside section produces a workable left on low to mid tide, breaking over submerged rocks scattered through sand. When the tide pushes up, the action shifts inside to a beachbreak with additional peaks spread across the lineup. Wave shape ranges from steep and hollow sections through to mellower, well-covered walls -- the outside reef can throw barrel sections on its day while the inside stays more forgiving. Winds from the S and SE are offshore here, and importantly this is the last break heading north that still holds protection from any southerly wind. The crowd factor sits at moderate -- not empty, but far from the zoo of more famous Taranaki points. The spot attracts a mixed crew from beginners on the inside to more experienced surfers targeting the outside reef left. A fatal shark attack occurred here in the 1960s, and submerged rocks remain an ever-present hazard across the lineup.
