Surf spot guide Β· Taranaki, New Zealand
Boulder point straddling Puniho Rd with a barrelling left and a predictable shreddable right wall.
High Waves
Large waves up to 2.9m expected at Rocky Lefts and Rights. Peak conditions around 9:00 PM.
Exercise extreme caution when entering the water. Strong currents and large waves present. Warning valid until 9:00 PM.
Rocky Lefts and Rights sits on a boulder point accessed via Puniho and Paora Roads on the Taranaki coast, about 10km south of Oakura. The left is the headline act - on straighter W swells it pitches into proper barrel sections before walling down the point, covering 200-500m on a good run. Straighter SW-to-W swell angles maximise the tube potential, while more southerly lines tend to section. The right is shorter but more forgiving: a predictable, down-the-line wall that holds shape across a wide swell window and rewards progressive surfing. Both waves need at least mid tide to cover the shallow boulders and avoid the exposed boils; incoming tide is the sweet spot. An E wind keeps both faces clean. The spot absorbs size well - 0.6m is functional, 1.8-2.4m is where the left gets serious. Gets sucky and fast when it fires, demanding precise positioning and confident bottom turns. Sharks are present along this stretch, and submerged rocks are a constant through the lineup.
Barrel sections pitch down the point for 200 metres on straight W swells.
Moderate crowds on occasion β so many waves along Puniho Road that surfers spread out. Busy on the best swells during weekends.
