Boulters Bay - also known as Boulders Bay or East End Beach - is a small, accessible cove at the western end of Fitzroy in New Plymouth, where river-deposited boulders extend a fair way offshore and create structure for both lefts and rights along the bay's extremities. The wave is not a true pointbreak despite the directional options; instead, the boulders form scattered reef sections that channel swell into fun, well-shaped walls suitable for all abilities. The local mal brigade is a fixture here, and on clean days the lefts and rights offer cruise-worthy rides of 50 to 100 metres. Mid to high tide on an incoming push covers the boulders enough to produce clean shape; any southerly wind works offshore. SW swell is optimal from a wide SW to N window. Size range is 3 to 2.4m, with the wave handling moderate surf comfortably. Parking is easy directly in front of the bay, and large driftwood logs mix with the surfboards on the beach. Rip currents and submerged boulders are the main hazards.
