Surf spot guide · Bali, Indonesia
Playgrounds is the most user-friendly a-frame reef break on Nusa Lembongan, offering mellow, rippable walls over a sharp live coral reef.
Playgrounds is a popular reef break located off Nusa Lembongan, Bali, reached by a short paddle from Coconut Beach through the deep channels on either side of the reef, or by a local boat drop-off. The spot features an a-frame peak offering both left and right waves from the same takeoff. The lefts are more walled up with multiple sections ideal for maneuvers, while the rights begin with a barrelling section before becoming shorter and slower. Situated in a protected bay, Playgrounds receives less swell than other local breaks and needs a moderate south to southwest swell to turn on, which makes it the gentlest of the island's reefs and the natural first step into reef surfing for intermediates. It keeps breaking across the tide range when the neighbouring reefs go too shallow, though dead low exposes coral heads and is best avoided. Crowds are heavy, particularly in peak season and inside the narrow tide window, and surfers should be mindful of the constant current and of boat traffic.

+9 MORE →Playgrounds is the busiest lineup on Nusa Lembongan. The tide window is narrow and the takeoff zone is small, so everyone ends up in the water at the same time instead of spreading down the line, and day boats from Bali add to it. The constant current does move the pack around, which opens up more waves than the crowd count suggests.
Busy, energetic, accessible
Paddle out from Coconut Beach, also called Song Lambung, the closest sand to the peak, and use the deep channels on either side of the reef.
From the main Jungut Batu strip it is about a 25 minute paddle, so negotiate a boat drop-off if you would rather save your arms.
Mid tide is the sweet spot: enough water over the coral, and less current than a big high.
It needs a moderate south to southwest swell to wrap into the bay. On small days it can be flat while the outer reefs still break.
The left is the longer, more workable wall with three or four turn sections. The right gives a quick cover up before it pinches and slows.
It keeps breaking as the tide drops when Lacerations and Shipwrecks shut down, but stay off the inside once the coral heads show.
