Gunung Payung is a remote south-coast reef break below the cliffs near Nusa Dua. It receives Southern Ocean swell and can produce punchy, fast waves, generally favoring more experienced surfers. The reef is shallow in places, with limited room inside and no dependable channel through the impact zone. It is usually quieter than nearby Bukit and Nusa Dua breaks, although access and conditions can change after heavy rain. Surfers reach the beach via a steep staircase from the clifftop.
Gunung Payung is generally less crowded than established Bukit breaks, but local surfers and visitors can gather when nearby spots are busy. Weekends and clean, mid-sized swells attract the most people.
Secluded and scenic
Check the reef carefully before paddling out.
Favor incoming to high tide when the inside section has more water.
Carry boards carefully down and up the steep staircase.
Paddle wide around the impact zone because there is no consistent channel.
Respect local surfers and leave the beach clean.
