La Bocana.

La Bocana is a cobblestone rivermouth that fires a fast, powerful left out of the mouth of the Rio Grande at the south end of El Tunco village. The main left drops in steep, walls up with a couple of hit-able sections, and finishes on a dredging inside barrel when the tide is right. A shorter, steeper, rockier right peels off the peak for surfers willing to deal with heavier urchin cover on that side. Together with neighboring Sunzal, La Bocana co-hosted the 2021 ISA World Surfing Games, the qualifying event for the Tokyo Olympic surfing debut, which cemented its identity as one of the most serious rivermouth lefts in Central America and distinguishes it from the right-hand point at nearby Punta Roca. The wave needs a south to southwest swell, handles size better than most spots in the area, and works best from mid through high tide when the cobbles are covered. Paddle out is straight off the rivermouth rocks in front of El Tunco. The left draws a competitive local pack, so the right sits quieter for those who want space.
