Matara Beach is a wide, open beach with waves for all levels. The eastern bays near Lakshawaththa and Meddawatta offer gentle peaks for beginners and soft shoulders for intermediates, while a few small reefs to the west can give confident surfers some hollow sections. The lineup is usually quiet, and there are plenty of guesthouses and accommodations nearby. Water near the river mouth can be murky after heavy rain.
