Zarautz is a 2km arc of sand in the heart of the Basque Country, consistently ranked among the most crowded and high-quality beachbreaks on the Iberian Peninsula. The break fires on W through NW swells arriving from the Bay of Biscay and picks up even small pulses, making it one of the most reliable spots on the coast. Multiple shifting peaks run along the beach, producing crumbly-to-steep a-frame walls in the 0.3m to 1.8m range that lend themselves to performance surfing. A southerly offshore cleans up faces when the wind swings away from the sea. The wave is well-covered and medium-paced rather than hollow or fast, giving beginners room to learn while still generating enough wall for advanced manoeuvres. Pure W swells struggle to bend in past the headlands and lose power before reaching the sandbanks, so NW to N swell angles work best. All tides produce rideable waves, though the banks shift constantly and the best sections can change day to day.

Direct walk-in from the town beachfront. Roadside parking available but difficult in summer and at weekends. Lifeguard, showers, toilets, surf school and surf shop all present on site or in the town centre immediately behind the beach.
