Surf spot guide · Pais Vasco, Spain
River mouth beachbreak in the Basque Country requiring big NW-N swell to wake up, with forgiving a-frame peaks over sand.
High Waves
Large waves up to 2.3m expected at Orio. Peak conditions around 9:00 PM.
Exercise extreme caution when entering the water. Strong currents and large waves present. Warning valid until 9:00 PM.
Orio sits at the mouth of the Oria river on the Basque coast, a sand-bottom beachbreak that needs a significant NW to N swell or stormy conditions to produce rideable waves. The setup is sheltered enough that SW winds are acceptable and W winds manageable, making it usable on days when more exposed spots are blown out. Peaks break left and right across shifting sandbanks, running mellow to punchy with a steep initial section that softens quickly - well-covered walls at medium pace rather than hollow tubes. Tide plays a direct role: the higher the water, the more swell is needed to get the banks working, so lower stages produce more consistent action on small swells. The river mouth brings estuary and stormwater pollution, meaning the same stormy conditions that fire the wave can compromise water quality. Access is straightforward from the beach, with a car park, showers and lifeguard in season. Weekends draw local crowds but the spot stays manageable outside peak summer.

Sometimes crowded, particularly at weekends and during summer. The spot draws local surfers and beginners from nearby towns but generally remains manageable.

SW winds are offshore here so use it as a go-to when the more exposed spots are onshore
Avoid paddling out for 48 hours after heavy rain due to river mouth outflow
Crowds peak on weekend mornings in summer - early sessions midweek give more space
